Employer’s Guide to Maid Work Permits in Singapore

Hiring a Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) in Singapore involves several regulatory steps set by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). This guide simplifies the process of applying for a maid work permit in Singapore and helps you meet the requirements for a smooth hiring experience.

1. Employer Eligibility for a Maid Work Permit in Singapore

Before you can apply for a Work Permit, you must meet specific criteria. You must be at least 21 years old, not be an undischarged bankrupt, and have the financial capability to hire, maintain, and provide acceptable accommodation for a helper.

2. The Application Process

The process begins with an In-Principle Approval (IPA). At Home Sweet Home, we handle this submission on your behalf. Once approved, the IPA allows the helper to enter Singapore and serves as a temporary work authorization during the medical checkup phase.

Key documents required include the employer's NRIC/FIN and the helper's passport details. For first-time employers, you must also complete the Employers' Orientation Programme (EOP) before the application.

Did you know?

A Work Permit is typically valid for 2 years and is renewable. You must ensure your helper's passport is valid for at least 6 months to avoid issues during the application.

3. Medical Examination

All helpers must pass a pre-employment medical examination by a Singapore-registered doctor within 14 days of arrival. The examination checks for tuberculosis, HIV, syphilis, and malaria. Only after passing this can the final Work Permit be issued.

4. Security Bond and Insurance

Employers must buy a $5,000 security bond (except for Malaysian helpers) and take out medical and personal accident insurance. This protects both you and the helper in case of emergencies. For more details, view our Insurance Guide.

5. Issuance and Renewal

Once all criteria are met, the helper will be issued a Work Permit card. You should receive a notification to renew the permit about 8 weeks before it expires. At Home Sweet Home, we track these timelines for you to ensure continuous legal employment.
